How to Keep Birds from Making Nests in Unwanted Places

Birds are a great part of nature, but their presence in certain areas is unwelcome. If birds are building nests in your buildings or property, there are ways to mitigate and prevent this.

The first way to keep birds from making nests in unwanted places is prevention. Do not give birds any reason to be in that area. Often times the main reason birds are in an area is food. If there is food around that birds are eating, remove it. Cover up trash cans that birds eat from and remove insect infestations if they are eating from that. Do not let people feed the birds.

The next main reason birds are in an area is nesting grounds. When birds make nests, they need to make them out of raw materials. Depending on the species this can be a number of different things, from straw and hay to feathers and grass. If it is possible, remove the nesting materials that the birds use. If they cannot find nesting materials, they cannot build nests.

The next step in keeping birds from making nests in unwanted places is bird deterrence. You can block off the areas that birds are making nests in with a number of different techniques.

The first and most effective technique is bird netting. Bird netting blocks off birds from nesting with near 100% efficiency. For most nesting scenarios it is the most effective method.

Bird netting can be applied in a number of different places. Birds often build nests under the rafters of canopies and underpasses, for instance. Bird netting can be installed in the rafters to prevent birds from building their nests in those areas.

Bird netting can also be used to block off crevices that birds may build nests in. These include chimneys and vents. A smaller amount of netting can be used here to prevent birds from building nests.

If birds are building nests on ledges, ledge modification is another bird prevention option. Ledge modification includes devices like AviAngle. These devices turn a horizontal ledge into a diagonal surface, ensuring the birds cannot land, perch, or build nests on such a ledge.

Bird wire is another ledge modification method that can stop birds from making nests in unwanted places. Bird wire is installed on a surface and runs along the entire surface, preventing birds from landing or making nests.

If birds are nesting already, take note that it is illegal to move the nest of almost all birds in North America by the Migratory Bird Treaty of 1918. Check local laws before attempting to move a nest or address a bird problem yourself.
