When to Use Bird Netting

Bird netting is the top-recommended bird control method for most major bird problems. Bird netting excludes birds with 100% effectiveness, blocking them completely from protected areas. It is usually the best choice if you have a scenario that warrants bird netting in your bird control plan.

Heavier bird problems and bird infestations are only solved by installing bird netting. In bird infestations, birds flock in great numbers because nesting grounds are nearby. Common nesting grounds include in the rafters of buildings, under solar panels, in vents, under bridges, and in other covered, enclosed locations. These locations can almost always be blocked off with bird netting.

Once installed, bird netting will last for 20+ years and endure all weather conditions. It is a long-term solution to your bird problem.

At AviAway, bird netting is our top-recommended choice for solving bird infestations. The steps to solve a bird infestation are predictable: remove the birds' food sources, hire a bird control company to get a permit to relocate the birds, and install bird netting over their former nesting grounds to prevent the birds from returning next season.

There are a few significant situations where bird netting is the most obvious choice for bird control: in the rafters of buildings, over agriculture, and bodies of water.

Bird netting is an excellent choice for excluding birds from the rafters of buildings. Types of buildings include warehouses, docking bays, hangars, canopies, gazebos, and other structures with overhead rafters in which birds can nest. Bird netting is applied over the entire rafters structure of the building, entirely blocking out birds from nesting or roosting inside.

This solution keeps birds from entering above the rafters of a building and nesting in it. With bird netting installed, you will avoid birds remaining inside your building, nesting, reproducing, and causing a bird infestation. You will also prevent fire hazards inside the building as well as nesting bird disease risks.

Bird netting for the rafters of buildings is the most common job we perform at AviAway. You can see more videos of bird netting installation for these types of buildings on our YouTube Channel.

Bird netting can also be applied to crops and agriculture. Birds often flock near an agricultural field and eat from the produce. Bird netting is an excellent solution for keeping birds from eating crops. Bird netting allows sunlight and rain to flow onto the crops, letting them continue to grow while preventing birds from eating them.

You can install bird netting by draping the netting over trees and crops, covering up the plants entirely. This solution blocks birds from eating crops they can't access through the net. Draping netting over plants mitigates bird damage, but it is not considered a best practice, as birds can still eat from the outside of the crops, and small animals like squirrels and snakes can get fatally trapped in the base of the netting.

Installing a scaffolding structure and then draping bird netting over the scaffolding is the other way to keep birds out from agriculture that is usually recommended over simply draping netting over the crops. With this solution, birds will not be able to access the plants in any way, and the scaffolding will keep smaller land-based animals from getting tangled in the base of the netting.

Bodies of water like koi ponds, fish hatcheries, airport runoff basins, and mining basins are other excellent bird netting choices. Bird netting here will block birds from eating fish in the water or landing on the surface of the body of water. Mining basins and runoff pits sometimes contain chemicals deadly to birds, so installing bird netting over these bodies of water will keep the birds from flying into their demise.

Like crops, bird netting can be installed with scaffolding supporting the net. This provides room between the water source and the bird netting, completely blocking birds from accessing it. Geese, ducks, herons, swans, seagulls, and other water-based birds will be excluded entirely from using a setup like this.

Bird netting is the best bird control option for almost all bird control scenarios. No other method excludes birds with the same degree of effectiveness. We have installed bird netting on gas station canopies, HVAC units, hotel balconies, retail store entrances, historical buildings, gazebos, and many more locations. If you need complete protection from all species of birds, you cannot do better than bird netting.

Summary: Bird netting is our top-recommended bird control option. Unlike other bird control methods, it will block birds from protected areas with 100% effectiveness. It is best installed over bird nesting grounds and the other regions from which birds need to be excluded, such as crops, agriculture, fish hatcheries, and airport runoff basins. Once installed, bird netting will last 20+ years and endure all weather conditions. It is a long-term solution to your bird problem.
